This morning at about 3:30 AM, Yara and I got pulled over by the cops. I was taking Yara to the hospital for her 24 hour call. Somehow, I managed to rouse myself at such an ungodly hour. Apparently, I wasn’t driving too good.
The car behind me pulled right behind me. The streets were virtually empty. I thought, “Damn, why don’t they just pass me.” I flipped the rear-view to block the glare of the headlights. Then a blue and white explosion of light told me that this morning wasn’t going to be good. I pulled over to the side and Yara proceeded to panic. She was going to be late at a new hospital. I was worried about where I stuck that insurance card. “Oh well, better not make any sudden moves,” I thought to myself. “Bet he’d love to shoot an Asian.”
He took our ids and asked me how long my front headlight has been out. I noticed it two days ago and told him. Yara put in that she was a medical student. Apparently that’s secret white folk talk for “I’m part of the inner circle. It’s okay, he’s mine”. He went back to his car to check our licenses and to see if Yara’s dues were paid up. Fortunately, they were. He gave us back our ids and told me to get that light fixed.
I stopped by Auto Zone this afternoon before dark. Yara wouldn’t be riding with me tonight.
